My name is Justin Smith. I am a writer, a critic, a fan, a composer, a poet, a self doubting narcissist, a hater, a lover and about anything else you can think of. Music is my passion, with movies coming in a close second. I live in Minneapolis and Des Moines, both are amazing, so i decided they would both work. I became extremly involved in the Hip Hop scene in Minneapolis when i was going to school at The Institute of Production and Recording. The Hip Hop scene in Minneapolis is a wonderland of talent overshadowed by the flocks of wannabe shitty rappers. When i saw this, i wanted to do somthing to make the talented rapers shine, and shitty rappers fall back, so i decided to create a magazine. I named it Cypher Magazine. It took me and a crew of hand picked designers and writers about eight months to creat the magazine. We also put out a mixtape with local talent (and non-talent) featured on it to hype the fans up about the magazine. The mixtape sold well and had a great turnout for the release show, but when it came around to putting the magazine out, heads butted and tears were shed. The crew i had essembled had become power hungry, and were demanding things i couldn’t deliver. So, with the magazine completely finished, i stopped the presses and never put an issue out. In the end, it was probably for the best, but i still feel like a owe a debt to the scene, like i need to kick the rest of the country in the ass and say, “Hey, look over here you dipshits!! This is what real Hip Hop is!! These are the real genius’s!! MTV is taking all of your souls, and these guys are the cure, the poets, the magicians, and the doctors you all need so bad!!” So i keep writing, spreading the word, telling the story through my tainted eyes. So some of the stuff you will read on my blog will be old, some new, some from Cypher Magazine, some from my personal stash, but all of it will be the truth.
